On-trend "open" design and cutting-edge convenience features

It's kind of amazing how far "open-ear" wireless earbuds have come in just a few short years. The Cleer ARC 3s represent the latest evolution: hook-style earbuds that don't even go inside your ears at all. They rest just outside and deliver a halo of sound that's spacious, full, and clear — while you stay aware of your surroundings.

Adjustable hooks help secure the Cleer ARC 3 earbuds just outside ear, so you can stay aware of your surroundings.

I've spent some time with these earbuds and calling them "feature-packed" would be an understatement. They arrive inside a touchscreen case that's overflowing with controls and information, including battery life right on the display. The case lets you play, pause, and skip tracks, adjust volume, choose from different sound settings, and more.

Advanced wireless connection and Dolby Atmos spatial audio processing

Music plays wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.4, the strongest, most reliable version of Bluetooth yet. This generation features aptX Lossless, aptX adaptive, and LDAC, codecs that allow for streaming with less compression on compatible devices. Multipoint is on board, which lets you pair to two devices at once — a gamechanger for work.

These earbuds are also optimized for Dolby Atmos and spatial audio. Special processing elevates the sonic scope and sense of directionality by delivering proper sound localization cues for our ears and brains. It helps create spacious 3D soundstage in which music, movies, and other audio sources come at you from all sides, behind you, and even above your head.

Powerful sound from large, smooth-moving drivers

Cleer uses larger drivers than found in most earbuds to ensure the sound is full and detailed, even with the open-ear fit. The 16.2 mm drivers use patented "ironless" magnet configuration that allows for more fluid, free-flowing diaphragm movement. That drastically reduces distortion throughout all frequencies, even when competing with external sounds.

It also helps extend the width and size of the soundstage, for those soaring Atmos effects. Don't worry — even though the drivers are big, the overall weight is distributed well. The wraparound hooks help keep the pressure off known pain points on the ear.

Bass goes deeper than I expected

These earbuds deliver deeper bass than most earbuds with an "open" design. Now, it won't go as deep as bass-heavy earbuds that make a noise-isolating seal, but I was surprised at how hard it hit. Put it this way: Kendrick Lamar's new album dropped right as I was auditioning the ARC 3 earbuds — and I never felt like the low-end was lacking. These earbuds were up to the task with plenty of mid-bass punch.

Hands on — getting the right fit

My first piece of advice when wearing the ARC 3? Don't get too frustrated with the initial fit because there's a learning curve when you first put them on. I'm so used to traditional earbuds, I became preoccupied with aligning the drivers to my ears.

The touchscreen case gives you control over music, volume, sound presets, and much more.

Which brings me to my second piece of advice – focus on getting the hooks positioned behind your ear until they feel comfortable. Once I got them into place and put my glasses back over them, they felt secure and unobtrusive. And the earbuds ended up where they needed to be.

Listening impressions

The drivers and processing took over from there. Even without Dolby Atmos “off,” the sound presentation was holographic and outside the head. There's a nice presence to the mids — vocals sit front and center while percussion has snap and bite. That's notable, because that's something that's often sacrificed as soundstage extends.

Those components kept the Father John Misty's “Being you” grounded and on track. At first, I was so entranced by the stripped-down vocals and straight-forward drumbeatthat I mistook it for a simple arrangement. I almost didn't realize all the other instruments entering the fray, and was caught off guard as the strings built to a crescendo that encircled my head.

Long-lasting battery

You get about ten hours of listening on a single charge, which is very strong battery life for wireless earbuds. The included charging case banks up to 40 hours of power to recharge the earbuds and just three minutes in the case buys you an hour of listening. It also has a built-in UV light to help sterilize the earbuds while they're charging.

Control by touch, head movement, or the Cleer+ app

Along with the case, These earbuds offer touch control over music, calls, and more. They also have a built-in motion sensor that lets you use different head movements to answer or decline calls. (That feature is kind of neat, but they do allow you to turn it off if you'd rather not use it.)

You can also customize controls and adjust the sound with the Cleer+ app, a free download to your Apple® or Android™ device. The app lets you choose from presets or dial in the EQ. You can also keep tabs on battery life or activate a tone to help find a missing bud.
