Timeless Q3 design with tighter views

Leica's Q3 43 camera gives you the same great optics, automatic functions, manual control options, and 60-megapixel sensor as its sibling, the Q3. That also includes excellent autofocus, a slick tilting touchscreen, and a high-performance electronic viewfinder (EVF). New in the Q3 43 are its apochromatically corrected 43mm f/2 lens, expanded digital zoom range up to 150mm, and gray leatherette cosmetics.

This camera has a long list of modern features that can help you produce brilliant-looking images with just the press of the shutter button. But it also really invites you to ditch the menus and work in manual mode to get the results you want.

A tradition of optic and mechanical excellence

I learned photography on my dad's old 1950s Leica M3, and I bet it's still taking great images for the lucky person he eventually sold it to. I carried it around with me in high school and college, and it traveled along with me in my backpack across Europe in the early '90s. It really took a beating, but that rock-solid, precise German design and build always functioned flawlessly, and took great photos.

The Q3 43 has that same durable precision. The fixed prime APO-Summicron 43mm lens has a maximum aperture of f/2 so it performs beautifully in low light. You can't change the lens, so that's one less thing to think about — although you can use the digital zoom crop modes to approximate 60mm, 75mm, 90mm, 120mm, and 150mm lenses. The lens also has an integrated macro mode for shooting subjects at extremely close range.

Modern technology and flexibility

The Q3 43's modern amenities make life better for all kinds of photographers. The full frame 60-megapixel sensor can capture intricate detail, even when you use its digital crop modes. The amazing ISO range — 50-100,000 — means low light is rarely a problem. Rely on high-speed autofocus — with human and animal detection plus subject tracking — or use aperture or shutter speed priority to have the camera give you an assist in capturing the shot you want. Shoot 8K video when you'd rather save the moment as motion instead of stills.

Unlike the fixed touchscreens found on the Q2 series, the one on the Q3 43 tilts up and down, making it easy to set up low- and high-angle shots. You can also use it for focusing, shooting, and more with gesture-based controls. I'd be just as likely to rely on the EVF and manual control options on the camera body and lens barrel, framing my subjects and capturing images in the way I first learned on a Leica.
