Sonus faber Sonetto V G2

Elegant Italian craftsmanship, with shapes inspired by nature

The Sonetto V G2 speaker sits in the middle of Sonus faber's new line of high-end floor-standing towers. These substantial — yet highly refined — speakers use a three-way driver layout with designs inspired by shapes found in nature. You can use a pair of them in a hi-fi stereo listening setup, or you can build an entire Sonetto G2 home theater system around them.

High-tech drivers and enclosure

Sonus faber gave the V G2 a silk Damped Apex Dome™ tweeter, or DAD for short. This unique tweeter design combats pesky distortion and improves high-frequency extension for clearer, more detailed treble.

This speaker uses a three-way driver design. Below the tweeter is a 6-1/2" Camelia midrange driver, which uses a unique flower-inspired shape to avoid sound-muddying resonances. It was originally designed for the company's high-end Suprema speakers.

The tweeter and midrange are housed in a specially designed sealed cork enclosure, another feature borrowed from the Suprema line. It complements the drivers with an ideal internal volume for rich, natural-sounding detail.

Below the midrange are a pair of 6-1/2" woofers that handle the low-end. Each features an aluminum demodulation ring that reduces distortion when the speaker's voice coil and motor structure move. The woofers' surround design is inspired by the natural shape of a flower's petals. It acts sort of like a wave breaker you might see on the coast, preventing harmful resonances from muddying the sound.

Concrete base minimizes vibrations

Sonus faber chose concrete as this tower speaker's base material to strengthen the cabinet and to give it extra stability. The material also damps resonance to keep outside vibrations from interfering with the sound. It's rare to find speakers that use concrete in their baseplate design, and it's just one way in which Sonus faber makes their Sonetto lineup stand out from the crowd.

Carved into the concrete are several channels that converge into a central, wide chamber. Sonus faber calls this a "reflex duct," which acts as a downward-firing port for the woofers. The smartly engineered duct opens up loads of placement options, as it allows for optimum airflow whether the speaker is placed in a corner or up against a wall.

Controlling internal pressure

The V G2 also uses Sonus faber's acclaimed Intono technology. It tackles an often-overlooked part of speaker design: internal pressure. When drivers are moving, especially during more energetic sections of songs and soundtracks, the pressure inside the cabinet can cause the drivers to lose some fidelity. Intono helps keep the pressure equalized between the internal acoustic chamber and the reflex duct so the sound stays crisp, clear, and coherent.
