Streamlined noise-canceling earbuds designed for top-shelf sound

The Technics EAH-AZ100 are the newest flagship wireless earbuds from Panasonic's premium audio brand. Those familiar with the iconic hi-fi turntable company probably aren't surprised to hear they've doubled down on sound quality. These earbuds are more compact than the previous-generation EAH-AZ80s — but promise even better tonality and accuracy thanks their newly designed "Magnetic Fluid Driver."

That's saying a lot, because I tested the EAH-Z80s last year and wrote that "I enjoyed the neutral tuning, clear and detailed across all frequencies." They start with similar 10mm "free edge" drivers that use a diaphragm made of rigid, lightweight aluminum, suspended in a special baffle system. This time around, Technics injects a lubricant with magnetic particles into the space between the driver magnet and voice coil. They say this helps lower distortion even further.

You'll also find all the modern headphone conveniences. Bluetooth 5.3 is on board for a strong, reliable connection — along with the premium LDAC and LE Audio formats, helping retain more musical detail on compatible devices.

And these are one of the few earbuds that offer multipoint connection for three devices, instead of the usual two. That means you could switch seamlessly back and forth between your phone, laptop, and a third device for music, calls, and video meetings.

Several sizes of ear tips for a proper fit — including smaller ears

Earbuds are only as good as their fit, both in terms of comfort and performance. And I often hear from people with smaller ears who tell me that most in-ear headphones just aren't for them. They're too bulky or the move around too much.

Technics includes five pairs of ear tips, including size "XS" tips for smaller ears. The lightweight 'buds feature an ergonomic design that avoids pressure points. They also help create a tight, secure seal that improves both noise cancellation and bass response.

Adaptable and effective hybrid noise-canceling circuitry

The EAH-AZ100 uses a total of six built-in microphones to read external sound. Internal circuitry then adjusts the amount of noise cancellation in real time. I found that the previous-generation AZ80s were a notch below the highest tier noise-cancellation from the Sony and Bose. But they easily quieted consistent, low-frequency sounds like my lawnmower engine.

You can also choose from different ambient modes to quickly hear your surroundings without removing the earbuds. Everything can be controlled by touch or the free, downloadable mobile app.
