The sweat-proof Technics EAH-AZ80 wireless noise-canceling earbuds deliver well-balanced sound.

I'm not surprised that the Technics EAH-AZ80 wireless noise-canceling earbuds deliver sonically — few companies are as ingrained in the history of music and audio. But the brand behind some of the most iconic old-school turntables are also deeply in tune with modern conveniences. After testing these true wireless earbuds for several weeks, I found their handy features fit in well at the office, gym, and everywhere in between.

That includes noise cancellation, ambient modes for hearing your surroundings, and voice-detecting mics for clear calls. Plus, everything can be controlled by touch or the free, downloadable mobile app.

Latest-gen Bluetooth that can pair up to three devices at once

When it comes to wireless performance, these earbuds are actually one step beyond the field. Bluetooth 5.3 is on board for a strong, reliable connection — along with the premium LDAC format, helping retain more musical detail on compatible devices. And these are the first earbuds I've used that offer multipoint connection for three devices, instead of the usual two.

That means you could switch seamlessly back and forth between your phone, laptop, and a third device for music, calls, and video meetings.

Several sizes of ear tips for a proper fit — including smaller ears

Earbuds are only as good as their fit, both in terms of comfort and performance. And I often hear from people with smaller ears who tell me that most in-ear headphones just aren't for them. They're too bulky or the move around too much.

These earbuds sport a streamlined design and stay put as you move

Technics includes eight pairs of ear tips, including six different sizes and two different shapes of "S" and "XS" tips for smaller ears. The lightweight 'buds are designed to mimic the concha, and I found they avoid pressure points well. I chose a size larger than normal to ensure a tight, secure seal. This helped improve the noise cancellation and bass response.

Adaptable and effective hybrid noise-canceling circuitry

Technics uses a series of built-in mics that feed back and forth to read external sound. The internal circuitry then adjusts the amount of noise cancellation in real time. Using my usual lawn mower test, I found the noise-canceling circuitry very effective.

It's a notch below the highest tier noise-cancellation from the Bose QC Earbuds II and Sony's flagship earbuds. But it did well with consistent, low-frequency sounds like my lawn mower engine. I was still able to mow the grass and listen to podcasts at low volume levels.

My listening impressions: "Free Edge" drivers deliver smoothly detailed sound

While I appreciate all these conveniences, there's a reason I mentioned the sound first on this page. It is the killer feature. Technics uses relatively large 10mm drivers with diaphragms made of rigid, lightweight aluminum and suspended in a special baffle system.

It's designed to lower resonances and deliver smooth, even sound. I enjoyed the neutral tuning, clear and detailed across all frequencies. The presentation was largely intimate — not far beyond the ears — but the vocals and instruments held distinct placement and breathing room between each other.

Tight, potent bass

These earbuds aren't the most bass-heavy out there, but they can serve up swift, high-impact low end, free of bloat. Pino Palladino's ever-present bassline fuels the De La Soul track "All good." In lesser headphones, it can either come off weak or overpower the vocals. The EAH-AZ80s provided head-nodding thump — that blended nicely with the soulful back-and-forth between the legendary emcees and Chaka Khan.

Resolving highs and intricate mids

They succeed on music where mids and highs carry the day, too. That includes all the complexities of the album "Voices of Rachmaninoff," a collaboration between cellist John-Henry Crawford and pianist Victor Santiago. While the two musicians complement each other well, they are occupying many of the same frequencies, and the Technics earbuds handle it all swimmingly.

On the Black Sabbath ballad "Changes," the piano melody has a melancholy bite, while the orchestral tone of the synthesizer haunts the whole soundstage. Ozzie's vocals originate from the center through the verses, even with the echo effect, then seem to rain in from everywhere for the chorus. It's quite the way to experience a song that's already quite affecting on its own.

Solid battery life

You get about seven hours of listening and noise cancellation on a single charge, which is good battery life for true wireless earbuds. The case banks up to 17 hours of power to recharge the earbuds on the move. You lose some battery life if you make an LDAC connection — but a 15-minute quick charge gives you up to 70 minutes of listening.
